Cottage garden flower photos - a selection of scenes and sight lines in the winter picture gallery.
Cottage gardening is not concerned with individual flowers, but in the dark and dreary days of winter we're grateful for any flower that lights up the wintry gloom.
This is the period when trees and shrubs give shape and structure in the garden, with clumps of dead plant material, a few green patches - the rosettes of foxgloves and honesty in particular - and, oh wonderful surprise, a few flowers to cheer the heart.
It's a time of rest and reflection - and the perfect moment to really look at your garden, see the things you want to change and, oh dear, the items that need seeing to or repair.
One of our criteria for selecting a cottage garden plant is to answer the question "Does it provide structure, shape and colour in winter?"
The results of our selection can be seen in the pictures below.
These photographs were all taken in winter 2006/2007, from November 2007 to the third week of February 2007 with the exception of the picture immediately below which was taken a few years ago by our neighbours across the road, Jan and Marianne v/d Sangen.
