The front drive flower border of our cottage lit up in the winter sun by crocusses in flower - the bright pink splash on the paving stone is not a flower, it's a remnant of bunting from this year's Carnival, held the day before.
Very large photo - see details close-up.
Picture Description
The features, winter colours and plants in bloom are -
- Cottage garden features: herbaceous flower bed, background - our red brick cottage with door and window framed in white and obscured by the waving sandy-beige plumes of grass and a wide range of mallow remnants.
- Cottage gardening winter flowers and colours in the:
- Foreground - sun rose and honeysuckle leaves surround the letter box in grey-green and bright green.
- Flower bed - Crocus - starting from the bottom of the picture:
- Early Crocus - Crocus tommasinianus - outer side of the petals pale lilac with slightly darker petal tips, inner petal very pale lilac with a white edge and centre. Tend to let their petals droop after rain but still lovely.
- Snow Crocus (syn. Golden Crocus) - Crocus chrystanthus 'Blue Pearl' - outer side of the petals lobelia-blue, darkening lower down towards the bronze-yellow "heart", inner petal very pale blue with a white edge and golden "heart". Really does justice to it's variety name.
- Dutch Crocus (syn. Garden Crocus) - Crocus vernus - at the foot of the rose arch, a splash of purple. Two / three weeks earlier than usual.
